What are Treatments for a 5th Metatarsal Fracture (Jones Fracture)?

So you twisted your foot and now you have a 5th metatarsal fracture, otherwise known as a Jones fracture. How do you treat a Jones fracture?

What is a Jones fracture?

A Jones fracture is a 5th metatarsal base fracture in a specific location between the base of the toe and the shaft. Your orthopedic surgeon can evaluate your x-rays and determine what type of 5th metatarsal fracture you have.

How do I treat my 5th metatarsal fracture?

Treating a 5th metatarsal fracture depends on what type of fracture it is. You can read more about types of 5th metatarsal fractures here and here

The surgeons at Southwest Orthopedic Group can customize treatment to patients for their Jones fracture depending on their goals.

How do I treat my 5th metatarsal avulsion fracture?

5th metatarsal avulsion fractures can often be treated without surgery using a walking boot or a stiff-soled shoe. Ice and anti-inflammatory medication can also help in the acute phase of treatment. Patients are slowly transitioned back to shoes in approximately 4-6 weeks.

If the bone fragments are significantly displaced, then surgery can be considered.

What are nonsurgical treatments for a Jones fracture? Can a Jones fracture heal without surgery?

Yes! In general, Jones fractures can heal without surgery; however, the rate at which these fractures do not heal (called a nonunion), is higher than other fractures. Patients are generally treated with a period of nonweightbearing in a cast or boot. Then, patients are allowed to walk in the boot and transition into a shoe. Inserts can be used, either over-the-counter or custom. After healing, repeat X-rays and a clinical exam follow.

When is surgical treatment considered with a Jones fracture?

Surgery can be considered in a Jones fracture. Surgery for Jones fractures are typically done in athletes. Also, if a Jones fracture does not heal (nonunion), surgery may be recommended. Surgery involves stabilizing the fracture to allow for healing.

When can I return to sports after a Jones fracture?

If a Jones fracture heals uneventfully, patients can return to sports in 8-12 weeks; however, each patient is different and the type of sport they play may also affect return to sport. Physical therapy and working with a training staff will be needed to regain strength and motion.

Some patients may need inserts or supports in the shoes when returning to sports.

What are the risks of Jones fracture surgery?

All surgeries come with risks. Discuss your specific risks with your orthopedic surgeon.
